Me

I’m presently based in South Wales, UK – but am made of Northern DNA after being brought up around Ilkley and Skipton in Yorkshire.  Apparently I’m not all that far from Torchwood and am occasionally held up cycling in to work by filming for Dr Who, amongst other things (but more often than not it’s the really awful traffic Cardiff has).

I’ve previously entertained being: a scientific researcher – with specific interests in Glaciology and Earth Observation; a Senior IT Operations Consultant; a Financial Exchange bod, and; Local Government lackey. Now, however, I am doing mental pushups in a busy post delivering a radical overhaul of IT Services to around 40K users at Cardiff University.  Apparently this reduces down quite well to “he does a lot of sweeping up,” as one colleague has recently told the incumbent Chair of UCISA.

My current choice of kit is mainly Apple Mac based, after trading my last Sun Blade 100 in for a bottle of Plymouth Gin last summer (purely because it was taking up too much room at home, and definitely *not* because I have some dependency thing going on). I switched from Redhat and Windows XP, and this has thrown up some interesting ‘opportunities’ in the past 12 months, not least of which is the lack of proper support for Macs from Humax as you can see elsewhere on this site.

Oh, and I really, *really* like Tea and bikes – or bikes and then tea.  And cake.  Cake’s good too.

About the Author

Paul lives, rides and works in Cardiff, South Wales. His work seems to largely entail fixing things and keeping wheels on. Officially, he is actively engaged and interested in Enterprise Architecture these days, but has a secret past that involved standing around on glaciers collecting meltwater samples, and walking through endless fields of wheat taking radiance measurements.
